Teamsters Working Hard in Essential Industries During COVID-19 Pandemic
Updated On: Mar 22, 2020

Dear Local 162 Members:

The officers and staff of Teamsters Local 162 are incredibly proud of all our members who are working in essential industries for coming to work and getting the job done in every Local 162 represented industry and employer during this national and state emergency and pandemic.  When times are tough Teamsters have always been there to keep America’s commerce flowing.  We did it during World War II, we did it during 9/11 and we will keep on doing it now.

Our members at Fred Meyer, Albertsons/Safeway and UNFI are keeping the grocery stores stocked with deliveries. Our Coca Cola, Pepsi and Maletis warehouse, driving and merchandising employees are keeping grocery store shelves stocked in the key soft drink, water and beverage industry.  Our UPS and DHL members are sorting and delivering America’s critical commerce in the small package industry, including thousands of daily deliveries of critical medications.  Many elderly and other high risk folks in our communities rely on deliveries from UPS and DHL.  Our members at Reddaway are keeping critical freight moving.  Our Sysco Foods and US Foods members are loading the trucks and delivering food to area hospitals and nursing homes.

Of course, if you are sick and you need the time off from work, you should follow your call in procedures and notify your employer.  If you need any guidance your Local Union is here to address your concerns.  Every Local 162 Officer and Business Agent is working daily on your behalf and is available by phone.  We are receiving a higher than normal volume of calls, so please be patient.  To comply with CDC guidelines and protect our office employees, staff and other tenants who share our office space, we are not allowing walk-ins at the Local 162 office at this time, but again, the lights are on and we are all working.  We are just a phone call away at (503) 257-0162.  We have to take all precautions so we can serve the thousands of Local 162 members who rely on us.

If you are laid off, you should file a claim with the Oregon unemployment department.  Local 162 is also reaching out to our employers who may be forced to lay off members, so that every option to financially assist our members is on the table.

We have also attached an informational guide regarding COVID-19 that has been published by the Health and Safety Department of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.  The IBT is also providing additional resources at www.teamster/covid-19

Thank you to all of our Teamster members who are putting in long hours to provide essential services to the public during these difficult times and national and state emergency.

In solidarity, Bob Sleight, Secretary-Treasurer and Mark Davison, President
